Resorts World Casino New York City (RWCNYC) will honor the rich artistic history of the Caribbean with a new exhibit at the Red Wall Gallery. The “Carnival in the City” exhibit explores the history of costumes, traditions and arts and culture of the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn. The exhibit will be showcased until September 30.

RWCNYC recently hosted an opening reception celebrating the exhibit on August 9 at Bar 360.

The artwork is currently displayed on both levels of the casino’s gallery. The Times Square level features photos of traditional costumes worn during the festivities, while the Fifth Avenue level will feature photos of the legendary “J’ouvert” celebration from past years.

This exhibit showcases several traditions captured by Carnival “Mas Camp” bands, including Freaks Mas, Ramajay Mas, and Stronjeh International, as well as the famous J’ouvert band Roy Pierre & Associates.

The Caribbean diaspora has gathered every September at Carnival in New York City since the 1920s. Beginning in Harlem, the annual celebration moved to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park in the 1970s and is now held on Eastern Parkway, where it attracts millions of people each year.

Participating Caribbean islands include Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Jamaica, Dominica, Saint Vincent, Grenada and more. Caribbean countries such as Guyana, Suriname, and Belize participate in the festivities as well.

Resorts World Casino New York City is located at 110- 00 Rockaway Blvd., in Jamaica, New York 11420.
