$35,000 donated to combat food insecurity during Hunger Action Month

Catskills, NY and Queens, NY – September is Hunger Action Month and Resorts World New York is doing its part to ensure no New Yorker goes hungry by donating to several organizations dedicated to providing residents across the state with healthy meals.

Resorts World Catskills announced today it’s donating $5,000 to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, which will provide 20,000 meals to those in need, and has donated $10,000 to non-profit A Single Bite for its Family Meal Program, which provides healthy meals to children and their families in Sullivan County struggling with food insecurity.

“Resorts World Catskill’s support allows us to continue our mission of alleviating hunger and preventing food waste in the Hudson Valley,” said Sara Gunn, Director, Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. “Families across the state continue to struggle with hunger and poverty that was only exacerbated by the pandemic and Resorts World’s generosity means thousands of meals will end up on the tables of those who need them the most.”

“Rural communities are especially hard hit by hunger,” said Audrey Garro, Executive Director, A Single Bite. “Sullivan County has the highest rate of poverty in the Hudson Valley and the Child Food Insecurity rate is 11.7%. That’s almost 3,000 children who are not getting enough to eat. A Single Bite is providing families at least one healthy meal each week thanks in part to Resorts World Catskills.”

Resort World New York City (RWNYC) also announced today it’s donated $20,000 to support City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization, which rescues 75 million pounds of food a year and distributes it to hundreds of food pantries and soup kitchens across all five boroughs. RWNYC is a longtime partner of City Harvest, donating more than seven tons of perishable items in 2020 while they were closed due to COVID-19.

“We are so grateful to Resorts World New York for their continued support of City Harvest,” said Rebecca Fontes, Director of Business Partnerships at City Harvest. “At the recent NSA Trade Show hosted at Resorts World in New York, we were able to rescue 12,000 pounds of beverages, snacks, and unique produce items like habanero peppers and turmeric to donate to food pantries and soup kitchens across New York City. As we work together to reduce food insecurity across the five boroughs, this important ongoing partnership will help us continue to feed our neighbors—one day, one meal, and one New Yorker at a time.”

“Resorts World is committed to the areas we serve, and we are proud to give back to the community through these donations,” said Meghan Taylor, VP Government Affairs & Public Relations, Resorts World New York. “We recognize the difficulties our communities are facing when it comes to food insecurity, whether in the Catskills, Hudson Valley or New York City, and we are honored to partner with and support these organizations because of the hard work they do in ensuring none of our neighbors goes to sleep at night worried about where they’ll get their next meal.”

These gifts were made possible through Resorts World Gives, RWNY’s corporate philanthropic program, which invests in the economic and social progress of communities surrounding Resorts World properties. Click here to apply for funding.
