Marc Morial, President & CEO of The National Urban League, Presided Over the Ceremony
Queens, New York – On Friday, April 8th, Resorts World New York held a virtual commencement for the graduates of its rigorous six-week mentorship program, the Gumbo Coalition University, led by Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, and author of “The Gumbo Coalition.”. The students underwent intensive lessons by esteemed leaders and entrepreneurs on leadership and team building aimed at helping them to become tomorrow’s leaders. Resorts World New York presented $500 scholarships to each student. Kevin Jones, Chief Strategy and Legal Officer of Resorts World New York, also announced students received a participation bonus of $1,000, totaling their scholarship to $1,500.

The Gumbo Coalition University allowed us to do our part to share keys to success and prepare the GCU graduates to thrive and build careers,” said Michelle Stoddart, the VP of Community Relations at Resorts World New York.
Graduates of the Gumbo Coalition featured students from various colleges and universities, including SUNY, CUNY, and several private schools across New York State. The graduates are:

“My journey at the Gumbo Coalition University program has been extremely beautiful for me to cherish later. Not only have I cleared my fundamentals about leadership, but I also deepened my understanding of the how behind leadership. I feel proud to be a part of this community,” said Jaspreet Kaur, Pace University Student and Gumbo Coalition University Graduate.
The Gumbo Coalition graduation also featured speeches by GCU lecturers, including: Lavaille Lavette, President of One Street Publishing; Aswad Walker, Professor of African American Studies at the University of Houston; Silvia Mathis, Writer and Producer and CEO of Punkin Pictures; and Cedric Dew, Executive Director of Jamaica YMCA; and special appearances by: John Edwards, Executive Director of Metropolitan College of New York; and Desmond Murray, Associate Director for the Employer Experience for Marist College.
