Resorts World New York City (RWNYC) announced on January 2 the opening of the 2025 Gumbo Coalition University application portal. Students interested in learning more on how they can become the leaders of tomorrow have until this Friday, January 10, 2025 to apply for the six-week virtual program, which will kick off two weeks later on January 23.

“Resorts World is committed to investing in our future leaders, not just here in our backyard, but across New York State,” said Michelle Stoddart, Senior Vice President, Community Development, Resorts World New York City. “We are excited to begin another year of being a bridge between leaders of today and of tomor­row, to foster this kind of connectivity. Every young problem solver who wants to develop the skills, encouragement and support should consider applying before time runs out.”

“My experience as a Gumbo Coalition Uni­versity scholar was the best! I learned so many lessons that I can implement today, like in my student government meetings,” said Gurpreet Singh, a 2024 GCU Scholar from York College. “My favorite part was the graduation, where we got to meet the lecturers in person and even Marc Morial himself. I would recommend the program to other students, and my advice would be to participate in every lecture to en­sure you get the most relevant and specialized feedback.”

Students who successfully complete the program receive a $500 scholarship in addition to the lifelong skills designed to empower them in their leadership journeys. The program was inspired by renowned civil rights leader, former New Orleans Mayor and National Urban Leader CEO Marc Morial and the leadership lessons included in his first book, The Gumbo Coalition.

Since 2019, RWNYC has partnered with Gumbo Coalition University to empower the next generation of leaders by bringing students face to face with prominent figures from the business, media and nonprofit sectors for im­mersive discussions, hands-on exercises and lectures. Students learn essential skills, includ­ing consensus-building, decision-making under pressure, and the traits of transformative lead­ership.

To date, the partnership has shaped the fu­tures of over 115 scholars, many of whom have gone on to excel at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), private colleges, and public universities throughout New York City and State and across the country. With 36 awarded scholars, Marist College tops the list of Gumbo Coalition University graduates, fol­lowed by CUNY-York College at 20.
